Unfortunately, the lessons are not comprehensive or thorough enough to give students a practical understanding of the software and would not prepare them to use the applications professionally, as they were intended.

I had hoped that the books would be a stand in for the entirely missing User Guide for CS The Adobe CS Help is a reference, not an instruction manual, and there is a huge difference between the two. One will get much better instruction on Lynda. But, with no user guide for CS, they're the best thing we have available. Next 5 for you in this series See full series. Books In This Series Books.

I have never taken a formal class in computerized design or print graphics. I taught myself Photoshop using Classroom in a Book a few years ago. And from that alone, I got a great job as a lead designer. So I can't say enough about these books. Honestly, I cannot say enough about these books. They each come with a CD of lessons. The chapters are divided into each separate tool, so that you can really understand everything about the program.

And it's all done in an easy to understand way. You can study the chapters in order, or as you need them. The books do not assume that you already know something about the programs, although the chapters do go in sequence, so they would presume that you know the data from the previous chapters if you skip around. Just buy it. You won't be sorry. Since my Beginning InDesign class requires this book, I bought it used. I feel very lucky that my used book came in a prime "as good as new" condition with its CD case unopened.

Just in a matter of 6 weeks, this book, along with its exercises on the CD, has taught me so much that I can't imagine taking this course without it. The subject matters are very well-organized and thoroughly covered, and easy to digest. At the end of each lesson, you get many helpful hints and tips to make the lesson really stick. Hands-on exercises on the CD are very practical, and really fun to do. Yes, there are some errors in it, but not serious enough to hinder you from learning this incredible application.

To me, this book is more than well worth its price, and a real keeper. I have another InDesign text book that I use from time to time, but this book is my major learning tool at this point. It would be great if a textbook on intermediate to advanced InDesign is offered by the same team. One person found this helpful. Although the manual, Adobe Indesign CS4 Classroom in a Book, was described as used, it looked like it never had been opened.

It looked like it sat on a shelf somewhere, got pushed around a little now and then, but it was in excellent condition, a couple of corners took a hit but no big deal. Also, the price was right, I had been watching sales on ebay and this price was very competitive.

I am up to Lesson 5 now and I am very satisfied the way the lessons are progressing. It seems that after I am done with all the lessons, I will be able to go back and use it for a reference, the index in the book will put me back where I want to be. I would recommend buying this book from this seller and from this author. As a newcomer to Adobe as well as design I could not have had a better experience with the book and cd.

Until I used this book and the Illustrator Classroom in a Book , learning Adobe CS4 seemed overwhelming and I was afraid it would take me forever to figure it out on my own. Now, I look forward to each new lesson. Classroom in a Book breaks learning InDesign into small, easy-to-digest, bites and the lessons are fun, interesting, and instantly inspire me to apply the techniques to my own work. I think this inspiration factor is why I like this series so much better than the other tutorial books I've purchased.

Perhaps it has something to do with the kind of work I do, which involves technical report writing. By the way, I haven't found anything wrong with this book, contrary to what some of the other reviewers have said--I'm glad I didn't listen to them.
